Post: Specialist BMS in Virology (Band 6) – Southampton

We’re looking for motivated, experienced and enthusiastic HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientists to join the virology team at University Hospital Southampton Foundation Trust (UHS).

The Microbiology and Virology Service has recently become part of UHS’s Pathology Department. This is an exciting time to join us as we move forwards in developing the department within the NHS trust.  The department processes over 600,000 specimens per annum and employs over 70 staff.  It provides a comprehensive service covering virology, serology, bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, and parasitology, and has a well-equipped molecular facility.  As a Specialist BMS, you will be expected to work throughout all of sections of Virology. You will be required to work evenings, weekends, and Public holidays and participate in the on-call rota as rostered.

The ideal candidate will have completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Virology (or Medical Microbiology). However the department does offer the opportunity to complete a portfolio if this is identified as a training need. The department is fully committed to your continued professional and personal development, and the diverse training we can offer you will maximise your future employment and promotion prospects. The laboratory is accredited for training with the IBMS and HCPC.

The Laboratory is currently UKAS accredited to ISO 15189.   There is a wide range of equipment throughout the department including Diasorin Liason XL, Qiagen extraction and post elution PCR platforms, ABI7500 real time PCR platforms, Abbott M2000.
